Make sure your outfit choices are comfortable, but look good.
Try not to wear complicated patterns or prints, and its a good idea to avoid big logos, and football shirts I'm afraid just don't look cool in family photos!
Parents it is great idea to accessorise if you like! Adding fun scarves, headbands, hats, can add a bit of flare to the images.
Try and coordinate/compliment your colours a little with each other. Some families co-ordinate completely...i.e. all black tops/jeans or all white for summer shoots but it's up to you and what you feel comfortable with. Subtle tones and plain colours work best.
Match your styles as a family. i.e. you are all are dressed either casual or smart or alternative or grungy or whatever you like, but you are all similar!
If the weather is looking either a bit wet or cold please take a jacket just in case. We can leave it in the car. We will be wandering around for an hour outside though, so make sure you have enough layers and are warm enough, if it's winter.
If we are on hills or forest or beach etc please try and wear practical/comfortable shoes e.g. trainers, boots. Depending on the time of year we will be doing some walking and the ground may be uneven and/or muddy. (Sandles, flip flops or tom style shoes aren’t really suitable).
If you are planning on getting a bit muddy, chuck a towel or cloth in the car for emergencies!
Rugs are always super handy!
Don’t show up to a photo shoot on an empty stomach. Make sure you have a snack before hand. Some families may want to plan a dinner after. If this is your plan, just be sure to grab a quick bite before the photo shoot.
Get ready early and decide clothing choices for the family in advance. I know it can be a real mission getting everyone organised and looking good, and I hate to nag - but try not to leave it all up to the last minute! Throwing clothes on screaming kids and rushing around just before you are all out the door and bundled in the car is not conducive with relaxed, natural, fun looking photos!
Remember we are going to be creating memories and we want them to be fun, happy ones.
Be yourselves. Be loving, be playful, be funny... Feel free to pick the kids up in the air, lark around, smooch up with your partner, scream, laugh. Being yourself means I don’t need to ask you on the day and avoids it feeling staged or posed. It also allows me to capture your family as themselves however loving/chaotic you may be!
Props aren't essential so don't feel the need to rush out and buy stuff, but if you and the kids like...
kicking/tossing a ball around
on anything similar
feel free to pop them in the car and bring to the shoot. We may not have time to use or we just might! When you guys are all connecting doing a favourite activitiy it makes for even more natural, authentic looking photographs.
As you know I love taking natural, fun loving photographs. I will issue you some direction but will try not to, too much. The best shots are going to be the ones where you guys are oblivious to the camera, the ones where you guys are all interacting with each other. Sure we will have some where you are looking at each other and smiling and maybe even a couple looking at the camera! But my aim is really to capture you guys as a family hanging out, being affectionate and creating real moments.
The family photoshoot session will last about an hour. I'm a pretty relaxed person and will have my range of photos I will want to capture. Photos of the kids, photos of you and the kids, kids by themselves, and you and your partner. If you have any ideas yourselves please feel free to sing out - try and let me know in advance though and we'll try and fit these in too.
That's about it folks! Remember we are here to have fun and create memories. See you at the shoot!
